So, who's behind Plated Bee?
We're James and Francis, a husband-and-wife team from British Columbia, Canada. We love having people over, especially when there's a ridiculous amount of food involved.
Which, as it turns out, is how we got ourselves into this whole thing.
Too much food. Not enough table.
It was Christmas Eve at James's sister's house. Everyone brought food, and lots of it. By the time the last guests arrived, the table was packed.
That's when we got thinking. What if serving boards came in smaller pieces that connected together, so you could arrange them around whatever was already on the table?
That was the idea. The fact that you could use fewer pieces for smaller gatherings and stack everything neatly away afterward? We figured that out later.
From a scrap of MDF to the real thing.
Luckily, a friend of ours owned a CNC woodworking shop and was willing to humour us.
We cut our first pieces out of some scrap MDF, clicked them together, and immediately wanted to make more.
A lot of samples, adjustments, and back-and-forth later, we finally had a product we were genuinely excited to put our names on.
And then came the slightly terrifying part. Seeing if anyone else wanted one.
Thanks to you, our hive is growing fast!
Turns out people like this thing!
Plated Bee is now making its way onto tables across North America, and it's pretty wild seeing all the different ways people use it. Some of you have come up with arrangements we hadn't even thought of.
We're looking at bringing Plated Bee to more countries, and working on a larger board system. We've also got a few other product ideas floating around that we think you'll get a kick out of.
Not bad for something that started because there wasn't enough room for the meatballs.
